Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
