A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The official announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the prior year. This project was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a significant growth of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated rate, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This pause was requested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
