Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of taking part.

"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, not just the back issue, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
