We present a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its online premiere on the Hulu service. At first glance, it could look like typical physical horror, but beneath Together exists a deep contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.
A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities
Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the two stars bring a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.
The story commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the country for her career. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While walking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two discover an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.
The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.
Layered Performances
A great deal of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.
In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.
The director's cleverest decision is that he never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.
Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their bond.
Thematic Depth
While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the allegory avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. Conversely, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on at this very moment.
Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
